There are certain types of food which you must avoid when you have braces and these are sticky and hard foods. They can easily damage brackets and wires. Sugary foods are also a no-no as they cause tooth decay. Remember that it is a lot more difficult to brush your teeth when you have braces. A few examples of foods to avoid are caramels, nuts, ice, licorice, and bagels. You should also cut down on soda, cookies, ice cream and drinks with a lot of sugar.
Some patients need to wear rubber down near the end of their treatment to help them bring their lower and upper teeth together. Although your braces will keep your teeth straight, it is the rubber band which will give them a good fit together.
